Magpies

One for sorrow, two for joy
Three for a girl, four for a boy
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret, never to be told.
Eight for a wish, nine for a kiss,
Ten for a time of joyous bliss

or

One for sorrow, two for mirth,
Three for a wedding, four for a birth,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret not to be told.
Eight for heaven, nine for hell,
And ten for the devil, his own sel'.

Carla,

I just want to thank you for your invariably thoughtful and interesting contributions to the proceedings of the third-year classes on Anglo-Irish literature. I myself gained from them and I know that the Irish students were certainly impressed. And you pulled off the difficult trick of combining all that with sensitivity and grace. I look forward to hearing good news of you in the future.
